I always say exactly the same thing about Coco Bongo: everyone should go at least once when visiting Cancun. The shows and performances at this entertaining nightclub are like no other in Cancun; the classics like Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley are tied in with the likes of Rihanna and Beyoncé. The atmosphere is fun and electric, attracting a range of party-goers from all walks of life. From students to middle-aged folks, Coco Bongo attracts the whole crowd because it offers something for everyone. It really is an incredibly unique experience, perfect for those who look for good nightlife when visiting somewhere new. Quick tip: if you identify with the ‘younger crowd’ and don’t mind crowded nightclubs, then take this tour on the weekend. If, on the other hand, you want to avoid the hustle and bustle, it’d be best to go on a weekday. Coco Bongo can be booked on the same day.
What should I take with me? If you need to take identification, never take your passport. Take another form of ID like a driver’s license or a photocopy of your ID. Also, make sure to keep your personal belongings like your cell phone and money safe in a handbag. Even better, leave everything you think you probably won’t need, safely in your room. Cancun is by no means a dangerous place, people on vacation just tend to have a few more drinks than normal which results in lost or misplaced personal items.
What time should I arrive? It’s recommended to arrive as early as 10 pm to be there when the reservations desk opens. This ensures getting a good spot for the upcoming show; even a table and a waiter if you’re lucky. The show starts at 11 pm sharp and tends to fill up very fast.
Is tipping customary? If you want good, fast service throughout the night, then yes. If you arrived early as recommended and got yourself a table and a waiter, tip him 100 MXN upon ordering your first drinks, and again halfway through the night. This will ensure a steady flow of drinks without having to hang around and wait.
What’s the best thing to drink? If you’re planning to drink alcohol at Coco Bongo (which, of course, you more than likely are) then I’d recommend just sticking to the basics. Your resort probably serves all the fancy cocktails like Pina Coladas and Mojitos, so limit the over the top drinks to your hotel. At Coco Bongo, it’s best to order rum, vodka, whisky and tequila with a mixer of your choice. If you end up having a few drinks this will save you ten fold as the quality of alcohol is on the end.
When does the show end? The show ends at 2 am, and you then have two options: stay at Coco Bongo and dance until 4 am, or head on home if you’re planning to rise early the next day. Otherwise hop in a taxi, uber or easytaxi which tend to cost around 200 MXN.
